Classic Wrecks & Reefs: Hurghada - Safaga & Sharm El Sheikh

wreck divingThis itinerary combines the most famous wrecks in the northern Red Sea with stunning wall and hard coral garden reef diving.

Dive the famous four wrecks of Abu Nuhas, the Ships' Graveyard. This reef lies close to the ship-lane towards the Suez Canal, and has claimed more ships than any other in the Red Sea. They are very scenic, fantastic for photography, and covered in corals, especially the Carnatic, that sunk in 1869.

The very famous SS Thistlegorm and the recently discovered Rosalie Moller are Second World War wrecks, and one of the highlights of this cruise. The SS Thistlegorm sunk in 1941; bombed by the Germans, while on a mission to deliver a cargo of ammunition and war material to the British troops in North Africa. The Rosalie Moller, a British coal cargo, suffered the same destiny only two days later.

egyptClose to the Port of Safaga lies the wreck of the ferry Salem Express that tragically hit a reef 10 years ago, when coming back from Saudi Arabia, claiming over a thousand deaths. Many fish and corals have made it there home now, especially famous is a big red Frog Fish.

This cruise will also take you to Ras Mohamed National Park, at the tip of Sinai, famous for its breath-taking walls, rich in soft and fan corals, and populated with huge shoals of fish. Nutrient-rich sediments from the Golf of Aqaba, attract many fish species and also feed the coral polyps, creating a paradise for divers.

In between wrecks you will also visit the reefs off Hurghada and Safaga, which are very rich and wide-ranging. A variety of colorful walls and hard coral gardens with plenty of colorful fish make them well worth a visit.

The Straits of Tiran & Ras Mohamed – From Sharm El Sheikh

The southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula offers a wide range of quality dive sites including some of the Red Sea's most spectacular reefs, walls, and a number of stunning wrecks. The Straits of Tiran are made up of four reefs - Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas and Gordon - which are home to a plethora of soft corals, gorgonians, and a great diversity of fish. Nurse sharks, whitetip reef sharks and even hammerheads can be found, and in the deep ridges that separate the reefs, larger pelagic fish are often seen passing through. Moving south, you reach the marine park of Ras Mohamed. These world famous reefs are some of the most breathtaking in the Red Sea. Nutrient-rich sediment is transported to the reef system from the Gulf of Aqaba, attracting an abundance of fish species, as well as giant gorgonians and multi-coloured corals. This makes for a most spectacular diving experience. To satisfy both the wrecks enthusiast and the scenic diver we also include some of the best wrecks in the area. Here is an outline of the sites you will dive.

The Gulf of SUEZ - The Wrecks of Ashrafi from Sharm El Sheikh

Despite the shallow depths of some of these wrecks (8-12mtrs) they have proved popular and exciting. We currently dive on 6 of them in the Gulf of Suez but many others have been located. The marine life in the Gulf of Suez has turned these wrecks into a real divers paradise. The Ashrafi Islands rarely receive any attention from dive boats but here several worthwhile wrecks await, including the largest in the Red Sea. Much of the seabed is dense with hard coral formations and the visibility is often good but not as good as further south, with conditions just right for the wreck enthusiast. This itinerary is combined with some of the more mainstream wrecks including an unbeatable night dive on the Thislegorm.
