The island is part of the Bali Barat National Park , a protected reserve area that encompasses 780 square kilometres. The name
Menjangan means “deer”. The Island's
sheltered location protect it from high winds and currents.
Menjangan island is surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches. Coral formations close to the shore are good for scuba diving and snorkelling.
The island of Menjangan is surrounded by a coral reef, characterised by deep drop
offs of up to 60 metres and by complex rock formations. These distinctive features have given rise to a
great number of large and small caves, festooned with sponge and soft corals
and often inhabited by large groupers, moray eels and in the smaller caves by young snappers and batfish. The sea beds are also rich in large barrel sponges and vibrant sea fans, some of which are truly enormous. Given the depth, the
moderate flow of current and protection from strong winds, it is
common to see tuna, shoals of jack-fish, batfish, angelfish, sea turtles, and on occasion, sharks, especially off the outer corners of the island.
At a depth of 45 metres the Anker wreck is found. It is fairly small, around 25 metres long, and is said to be over 100 years old. The wreck contains a cargo of ceramics and glass bottles and is completely colonised by soft coral; an excellent place to meet turtles and sharks.
The characteristics and the usually very good visibility make this the ideal destination for wide-angle photography,
or anyone looking for an excellent dive.
Returning towards
the main Island the environment changes, thanks the barrier that the
Island of Menjangan provides to the coast. There is a large lagoon, which much shallower waters, forming a canal up to the bay where the Mimpi resort is situated, and which takes its name from the Mimpi channel. The beds of the lagoon are rich in towering coral formations, with colours ranging from green to intense yellow. These formations are
a habitat for numerous small creatures such as gobies, frogfish, scorpionfish, lionfish, blennies, nudibranches and shelfish and are a good point for macro-photography and anyone interested in
marine biology, especially during night dives.
And there is a big surprise for the macro-photographers, video-operators and
marine biologists called “ Secret Bay ”. A small bay near the ferry port of Gilimanuk, at first glance insignificant, a strange play in currents has rendered the water temperature here more temperate, at most 25 degree C, and has created a habitat for Pacific and Indian ocean species,
with often a hybrid between the two. The muddy shallow beds, mixed with algae and debris,
are host to truly strange marine creatures, some of which have
recently been discovered by marine biologists for the first time, such as the 4 types of anglerfish including the Sargassum Anglerfish, Spotfin Anglerfish and one in particular that has created great interest among biologists, locally called Tono’s Anglerfish. Apart from the anglerfish, the bay is host to numerous different sea horses, dragonets, ghostpipefish, nudibranches, lionfish such us the Blue Finned lionfish, ribbon eels and much more. This unique bay has been and still is the preferred location of some of the world’s most famous underwater photographers and filmmakers, as well as researchers and marine biologists. |
