Diving Holidays to Marsa Alam, Red Sea: An Introduction

red sea reef mersa alamMarsa Alam mirrors the Red Sea region of old. Some 300km south of Hurghada the coast is suddenly as barren and dramatic as it has always been. Here the contrast portrayed by the rugged mountains bowing into the turquoise water is mesmerising. As striking as the awesome beauty of the coastline is the air purity thanks to the complete absence of humidity. Moreover the desert and mountains in the backdrop are vibrant with life, and thanks to the absence of development the starry skies at night are worthy of the best firework display. Because of the high presence of fresh water in the soil some of the coastline harbours rich mangroves born from the contact between fresh and saline water; this vegetation is rich with a myriad of both bird and marine life. Encouragingly the government has decreed these mangroves as protected nature reserves. Thankfully the handful of hotels now opened in the area are markedly aware about the responsibility of preserving this unique region and have built their projects in harmony with this delicate environment.

Those not comfortable on week long trips at sea on our liveaboards can now access some of the sites available on our southern Red Sea Liveaboards from the beautifully built hotels as we now offer day boat diving and mini-safari liveaboards so one can access sites such as Sha'ab Sharm, Ghadir El Bar & Arug Ghadir, Marsa Shoona, Abou Dahab, Samadai and Elphinstone. Shore diving is also available from Diving Ocean dive centre which offers contemporary diving facilities and flexibility when it comes to the sites dived each day.

Day boat trips with Diving World's Diving Ocean take you to Elphinstone, Sha'ab Sharm, Ghadir, Wadi El Gamal, and Ras Honkorab.

Sha'ab Sharm
One of the most beautiful dive sites south of Mersa Alam with steep sloping walls on its east and south sides. The reef has characteristic shelves located both north and south and is best dived by following the edge of the plateaux. The southern plateau offers the best dive with colourful soft and hard coral (25m), and an abundance of fish life such as barracuda, grouper, snapper and giant moray eels. Grey reef and hammerhead sharks are common in the area, with huge napoleon wrasses and groupers.

Ghadir El Bar & Arug Ghadir
The Ghadir chain is a group of 3 coastal reefs made up of Ghadir El Bar, Erug Ghadir and Ghadir El Shark. Deep canyons chiselled in the reef with endless fields of anemones and huge table coral formations make El Bar and Arug Ghadir one of the most impressive dives in the south. Ghadir East boasts some stunning coral formations with tunnels and caves and a feast of multicoloured soft coral. Turtles, whitetip reef shark, tuna, stingrays and grouper are only but a few of the species that can be found in the area.

In the winter months high seas and waves breaking along the coast can cause some difficulty in accessing some of these offshore sites. Dive Rangers organise day boat and zodiac diving trips between Elphinstone and Dolphin reef.

Marsa Shoona
Offers 3 different dive sites: one closed; sheltered from currents, and two open reef dives.
Large corals vary dramatically on the northern side and the southern area is also abundantly covered with corals. The most attractive aspect of this dive is the spectacular quantity of Pelalgical fish that seek temporary refuge from open sea currents.

Naaba Bay Diving Ocean divers use a speed boat which reaches the most famous dive site of Southern Red Sea: Elphinstone, in less than thirty minutes.

Abou Dahab
In vicinity with Elphistone, Abou Dabab bay is comprised of seven external reefs and two internal ones. These sites provide all divers with the opportunity to explore numerous coral formations with interesting circular shapes and in the surrounding area there are some submerged peaks.

Reef fish are present in very large colourful groups. All of the above are easily accessible dive sites but also very interesting for more experienced divers.

dolphins + diving
From Marsa Alam harbour the Southern dive site is very easy to get to: Samadai (50 minutes), also known as the Dolphin House, because of the presence of a large Spinner Dolphin population who spend part of the day resting in the area. This half-moon shaped reed, is famous for the beauty of its underwater caves located at the edge of the bay

Best dived in the quiet of the early morning when you are most likely to see hammerheads. This is a magical reef in deep blue water with countless rewards for divers and underwater photographers.

Along the southern plateau lies the most famous coral phenomenon: the Arch and face of the Pharaoh. Here large schools of surgeon fish dwell in the shadows of the arch as you drift through, while big pelagics swim in and around the deep-water corals. As you slowly ascend to your stops, observe the large silvertips along the plateau.

red sea

The northern plateau is the perfect place to see hammerheads Ð usually in only 25m of water! As you drift back along the wall, you are bound to see a turtle, or another large silvertip speeding after its prey, while the more timid creatures take refuge in the crevices of the reef itself. Wadi Gamal
This is one of the best reef dives of its kind and a personal favourite with the Dive Guides. The 18-20m site is set among flowing banks of hard coral and yellow-green soft coral separated by sandy beds. Resident species include angel and butterfly fish and white tip reef sharks. The site is seasonally visited by huge schools of unusually placid jack and tuna, allowing for great wide angle shots. A resident turtle can be found chomping its way through soft coral and sponges.
