Tulamben Bay, Indonesia: An Introduction |
Located on the north eastern coast of Bali and at the foothill of the island’s most important landmark Mt. Agung , home to Pura Besakih, Bali ’s mother temple.
The small village of Tulamben is rather unremarkable at first glance. Its beach is a spread of black sand covered by smooth, fist-size rocks. Like all the north coast villages, there are no lush rice fields here- Mt Agung and the other mountains steal the rain, which come from moisture-laden air that blows in from the south.
What brings people to Tulamben however, is not visible from above water. People come here to dive and explore the fantastic underwater world of Tulamben Bay . |

Tulamben Bay, Indonesia: Diving Around the area |
Overview:Dives from Tulamben are all from shore, with very easy access even during low tide. This means there are no time constraints so dives can take place from morning until around 10. p.m at the clients complete discretion. Heaven for photographers!!!!!
Tulamben Bay is uniquely situated off Bali and receives very plankton rich waters from the major ocean current that moves between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Tulamben is a superb place to do one's open water scuba diving training dives, as the gentle slopes, generally good visibility and variety of sites makes it ideally suited to making those first few dives. A wide variety of sites and conditions also make it great for advanced, specialty training dives and underwater photographers..
Tulamben hosts basically 4 dive sites: The Wreck of the Liberty, Coral Gardens, the Drop Off and Batu Kelebit. Each site is unique in its topography and fish life, all helping to make Tulamben the most popular diving area in Bali.
The bay of Tulamben is characterised by sandy shallows in the central areas alterned by rocks and coral formations, a shallow reef comprising sponges and soft corals and a drop-off bordered by a beautiful and colourful coral reef.
The bay is famous for the presence of the Liberty wreck, lying on its side on a sandy drop. The wreck is around 100 metres long and is easily reached from sandy drop, starting at a depth of 9 metres before reaching a maximum of around 28 metres. The Liberty is vibrantly coloured and offers a delightful setting for photographers, both for wide-angle and macro photography, such as the enormous shoal of jack-fish, wich are always good for a wide-angle shot, the very confident reef fish that allow the diver to swim at close range.
Apart from the wreck the Tulamben Bay is a photographers paradise, offering a wide range of shots, although macro-photography predominates, both in the sandy drops and in the shallow reefs. There are a number of possibilities for photographing wonderful creatures, like brightly coloured nudibranches, dragon fish, the hairy frog fish, harlequin shrimps, boxer crab, leaf fish, blue ribbon eel, moray eel and many others. Another distinctive feature is the cleaning station, found at 24 metres in the sandy drop, on a coral rock around 5-6 metres in length. This rock is inhabited by about a hundred cleaning shrimps and you are bound to meet up with magnificent groupers who let themselves be cleaned by the shrimps. They even hold their mouths open for easier access! Photographers can capture amazing images, but even non-photographers will appreciate the scenery.
